Millis Garden Club Finalizes Plans for
Newest Civic Beautification Project Catch Our Drift
Millis, Mass. The Millis Garden Club is the proud sponsor of a new annual civic beautification project called Catch Our Drift, which begins this Fall. On Saturday, September 16 and on one Saturday in October, members will plant hundreds of daffodil and daylily bulbs along one town-owned site. Heidi Dostoomian, MGC Project Manager for Catch Our Drift 2006, has selected the traffic island at Route 115 (Norfolk Road) and Village Street for the project’s first location. Town Officials approved the project at the August 21 Selectmen’s meeting, and Jim McKay, Assistant Director of Public Works is in full support of the new annual bulb planting project.
MGC Member Mike Ambrose, Ambrose Plants and Design, has provided the design for the planting. Bulbs will be planted in two raised beds adjacent to the pumping station in clusters, or drifts –which will provide a stronger impact of color when the plants are in full bloom. The daffodils will bloom first in mid-April, and as the foliage fades, the daylilies’ foliage will emerge and help cover the fading daffodil foliage. To view the varieties and the design plans for this site, please visit www.millisgardenclub.org.
Heidi Dostoomian further offers that “each year, a new site will be selected along town-own land and as a result, every Spring, Millis residents – as well as our neighbors visiting or driving through town – will be able to enjoy early splashes of golden splendor.” Proceeds from the 2006 MGC Annual Bulb and Plant Sale have provided the monies for this project. MGC wishes to acknowledge those who supported our fundraiser this past summer. Many Millis residents have caught our drift and will be planting drifts of their own along their roadside property for all to enjoy. MGC received orders not only from Millis but also from Wellesley, Reading, Medfield and Franklin. Community donations will also be accepted throughout the year. Anyone wishing to contribute to future Catch Our Drift projects may send a check to MGC, P.O. Box 535, Millis, MA, Attn: Catch Our Drift.
The Millis Garden Club is a non-profit civic organization established in
2004. MGC sponsors monthly educational programs for our members and our community.
MGC also contributes to the beautification of our town. At the Millis Public
Library, MGC maintains several garden containers along with the garden bed
at the Vietnam and Korean Monument. In addition, MGC plants and maintains
the garden containers at the following sites: traffic island at Route 109
and Exchange Street; the entranceway into VMB parking lot; the Police and
Fire Station; and the DPW headquarters on Water Street. MGC is the co-sponsor
of Millis Beautification Day, along with the Millis Lions Club. This worthy
community beautification project, now in its third year, will take place on
Saturday, April 14, 2007 from 8 am – 12 noon. The Millis Garden Club
is a member of the Garden Club Federation of MA, Inc www.gcfma.org,
New England Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc, and the National Garden
